An up to date and optimised LinkedIn Profile can greatly improve your chances of being head hunted for that dream job! LinkedIn is essential for professional networking and job searching. Companies use LinkedIn as a tool for recruiting and also for showcasing their companies for to potential employees. So how can you make the most of your LinkedIn profile so that it stands out from the crowd? Here are 3 useful tips to help you get started.
1) Treat your LinkedIn Profile like an online CV. Ensure that you keep your profile up to date. Your summary is possibly the most important part of your profile. It is the first thing that your reader will see. A great summary will catch the attention of the reader and encourage them to read more. Another thing to note is that if the reader is viewing your profile on a desktop computer, the first 220 characters are immediately visible, with the rest requiring a user click on “View More”, while on a mobile device, the first 92 characters are immediately visible. Therefore, there is even more of an urgency to grab the reader’s attention with the first few sentences. The summary should reflect the job you are aiming towards, not the role you are currently in. Speak in the first person to try and build a connection with your reader. Share your accomplishments, key achievements and future goals. Don’t be afraid to show your personality in this section as it will help to build a connection with your reader.
2) It is well worth your while researching your dream job positions online and picking out relevant keywords to include in your profile (e.g. project management, leadership, strategic planning, business acumen etc.). This will help to guarantee that you are selected when recruiter are performing LinkedIn Searches for potential employees. Update the “Skills” section. Endorsements from colleagues and connections help to build up a picture of your skillset. The best way to ensure you receive endorsements is to give them! So, get the ball rolling by endorsing your LinkedIn connections.
3) Having a profile photo can result in up to 21 times more views and up to 36 times more messages. So, it’s worth taking the time to add one. If possible get a professionally taken photo and at the very least the photo needs to look professional. No photos from nights out and no photos with other people cropped out. It just doesn’t look professional! Ideally, dress smartly and look directly at the camera. Finally, don’t forget to smile!
So now it’s up to you to use your LinkedIn Profile and get networking! I reccomend that you join any relevant groups and follow people on LinkedIn who are connected to your career interests. Join your college page, relevant companies and professional associations. As well as keeping you in the loop for any new job positions and industry advancements, it shows potential employers that you are making an effort to increase your knowledge and stay connected to industry advancements.
